Lecture 3 1/15/14 11:48 AM History of Drugs Tobacco • 1493- Tobacco was introduced into Europe by Columbus and his crew after they “discovered” it in the Americas th • 17 Century- death for smoking? o Russian Czar executes anyone on whom tobacco is found o Law in certain areas of Germany makes death the penalty for smoking o Ottoman empire decrees the death penalty for smoking tobacco • 1921 in the US, cigarettes are illegal in 14 states, and 92 anti- cigarette bills are pending in 28 states. Young women are expelled from college for smoking cigarettes • 1990s New approach to legislation and litigation regarding tobacco with cigarette manufacturers being challenged for health costs associated with use and leading to settlements with numerous states. • Today- what are our laws/restriction on smoking? o Smoking ban on campus o 18+ to buy o Pretty much no smoking indoors Alcohol/Temperance • 1789- First American temperance society is formed in Litchfield, CT • 1792- Whisky Rebellion • 1826- The American Society for the Promotion of Temperance is founded in Boston. • Prior to early 20thCentury, legislative controls on state and local level typically targeted to certain groups. For example, first law to limit alcohol availability in the US was in 1830 when MA banned selling alcohol
