Sociology- the scientific study of society and human behavior. The sociological imagination a term coined by c. wright mills (1959) refers to being able to look beyond common sense for explanation of why people act the way they do. Looks at how people are influenced by their society and how social forces affect human behavior. Stresses the social contexts in which people live. Step outside yourself and make the familiar strange . Private: some value cherished by an individual and felt to be threatened. Who we are as individuals is not merely a function of inherited biological factors. We are a product of our social location- the group membership we have based on our location in history and society. Focuses on broad features of society, large scale patterns. Qualitative research: ways of collecting data that are not readily converted into numerical form. Typically focus on generating info that reveals individuals experiences. Typically makes use of statistical tools to uncover patterns.
