Obsession with imagined appearance defect, so similar to obsessions of ocd. Involves aspects of social phobia and avoidance behaviors. No disparity between men and women in prevalence, but men are focused on genitals and torso, while women on face, skin and sexual aspects. Client video: super low self-esteem over face, poor parening (verbally abusive father), teased in school. Majority of people with bdd seek plasic surgery, but many get turned down for psychiatric or inancial purposes, and those that get surgery ind themselves, otenimes, even more obsessive, proving that bdd is mental and not physical. Cultural pressure, and social acceptability of cosmeic surgery. Perceptual processing biases (feature bias, based on fusiform face area) Atenion to aestheics (stroop tasks, arisic types are at higher risk) Treatment: cbt>ssris, however bdd is very resistant to treatment. Refusal to maintain acceptable minimum body weight, and an intense fear of gaining weight. Distorion of body percepion that is strongly ied to self-esteem.
