Schemes: organized ways of making sense of experience and information. Sensorimotor stage (birth-2years): obtain info from senses and motor experiences. Cannot obtain new information from past or future. No object permanence, the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be perceived. Preoperational stage (2-7years): use language to gain information, be aware of objects in their immediate view. Can"t understand law of conservation, centration- focus on single feature. No egocentrism- cannot take other people"s points of view. Concrete operational stage (7-11years): mental manipulation of actual objects. Formal operational stage (11 beyond): can create and test hypothesis, can do abstract and hypothetical operations, concerned about the future. Very young toddlers can understand basic laws of physics (4 months).
