You"re sitting in the theatre, consumed by total darkness aside from the bright projection of a moving picture on a screen. You are met with silence at the onset of this scene, an eerie lull which is coupled with a blurry, out of focus camera image. It"s quiet, too quiet, yet there is a low vibrating beat and an overwhelming veil of blue light that captures the image before you. This blue is both calming and confounding, you don"t know whether you should feel relaxed or on edge, and this is what lynch wants to destabilize us, to jar our preconceived knowledge of our world. You can feel the tension rising as betty (portrayed by naomi watts) and rita played by lauren herring) drive down the road. You have entered their world, and, although terrified, you cannot help but be intrigued by where they are going.
