Balanced : relatively equal skills in both languages. Understand language when spoken to them and/or read it but can"t. Additive : learns a 2nd language in addition to an already developing language. Subtractive : replaces first language with another language. Children develop as a result of maturation and their interactions w/ environments. Assimilation : interpret new experiences in terms of existing mental structures. Children learn to coordinate sensory input w/ motor actions. Actions and behaviors are governed by innate reflexes. Conservation : amt of substance does not change simply. Focus only on one aspect of situation bcs appearance changes. Concrete operational period (7 -> 11) tangible objects and actions and actual events. Allows children to mentally combine, separate, order, transform. Capable of conservation, decentration and decline in egocentrism. Children become capable of solving hypothetical situations and. Formal operational period (11 -> +) realizing consequences.
