Assumptions of relations when there are none. Individuals tend to divide the world into us vs. them. Can lead to racism, to war, to communal solidarity. Through our social identities, we associate ourselves with some groups and contrast ourselves with others. This group identification typically promotes an in-group bias, or a favoring of one"s own group. Individuals attribute other people"s behaviors to internal dispositions or external situations. Internal disposition: characteristic that is intrinsic to the individual. External situation: attributing behavior that is outside of the individual.
