Document Summary

Biology review chapter 1: cholecystokinin is secreted by the gastric glands to signal the pancreas to secrete digestive enzymes and the gall bladder to release bile. Pancreatic enzymes are released by the pancreas to aid in the chemical digestion of food. Bile is excreted by the liver to aid in the digestion of lipids: the muscular movements first occurs as the mouth is chewing. This causes the large food pieces to be broken down. Then, the food is sent to the esophagus where peristalsis, or wave-like motions, occur. This is to get food to the stomach. There, the food is ground and churned up, to make it a liquid. The pyloric sphincter then opens up, allowing the liquid chyme to go to the small intestine. After that, the food is moved to the large intestine until it is finally excreted as waste: the small intestine is covered in villi to increase surface area.
