Document Summary

Something is homogenous when there is only one visible phase (uniform throughout) Something is heterogeneous when you can see different parts of the mixture. Mixture: a combination of two or more pure substances that can be separated by physical mean: there are not definite proportions in a mixture, some mixtures are heterogeneous while other mixtures are homogenous. Elements on the periodic table each have 1-3 letter symbols that are used for identification. Most uncombined elements are written without subscripts except for diatomic molecules (br2, i2, n2, cl2, h2, o2, and f2), which always appear with a subscript in nature. Qualitative information: information that cannot be counted or measured (what elements are in a compound) Quantitative information: things that can be counted or measured (ex: the mole ratio of atoms in a compound) A chemical formula shows what elements are in the compound and how many of each element is in each molecule (shown by the subscripts in a chemical formula)
