Lecture 8: cell compartments iii: post-translational protein modifications, folding, and quality control and late stages of the secretory pathway. Proteins are translated and trafficked to the vesicle pathway. Need to recognize cargo, assemble code recruiting code proteins, Retrograde transport: as you move them forward you bring proteins that need to make their way back to the er can do so. The golgi apparatus is a bunch of plates that are stacked on top of each other. There is a continuity compartments which are very thin but very spread out, increasing the surface space by having a small membrane. In function: a lot of membrane, but don"t want to take up too much space. Slide 4: gfp and rfp-fusion proteins demonstrate maturation of golgi cisternae. Sec7-dsred = protein fused with dsred protein to shine red. Vrg4-gfp = protein fused with gfp to shine green. Researches knew before doing experiment that these are the regions are physically separated.
