He arranged the elements in order of increasing atomic mass, and similar properties would appear at regular intervals. Periodic law states: the properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers. Chemical symbols are a 1-3 letter abbreviation for each element, and they appear in the middle of each box. The atomic number is located below the symbol, the atomic mass is located above the element symbol. Oxidation states are in the top right of each box, and electron configuration is in the bottom left. Groups: vertical columns of the periodic table: all of the elements in a group have the same number of valence electrons, since valence electrons influence chemical properties a lot, groups have similar properties. The most active metals are located in groups 1 and 2. Most metals have densities greater than water (except alkali metals)
