Gene: numerous possible genes/chromosomal regions identified, fxr1 (10-25% of affected kids are autistic, mostly due to fragile x gene, no autism gene. Oxytocin in autism: synthesized in the hypothalamus, released via the posterior pituitary, more present when figuring out in-group/out-group (exclusion/inclusion, plays a role in enhancing social behaviors, establishing empathy, and decreasing repetitive behaviors. Brain size & growth: brains historically suspected to be larger than non-autistic, slightly more rapid brain and skull growth, happens the first 1-2 months and 6-14 months, not a way to diagnose kids, just an observation. Vaccines: mmr given 1 y/o and booster 4/5 years before school, no proof of being linked to autism.
