Southwestern iran became a center of culture and industry after the discovery of oil. Abadan refinery became largest oil refinery in the world. Initially there is no oil, until 1908, until it is found slightly north of abadan. Top of hierarchy, although small in number. Migrant indian workers in the early days of the company. About 1/3 indian workers in the beginning of the oil industry. Tribal chiefs entered into an agreement for money to employ the tribesmen. Tribesmen were hired as a collective tribe, by the tribal chiefs, and payed by the tribal chiefs. A lot of tribesmen were temporary workers.
