Neorealism: wikipedia will say its a lm movement with low budgets, non-professional actor. This is not wrong, but misleading: cinema 1945-1954. Film- makers did not have the self-consciousness of being a group, being neorealist. Producers started to behave like american producers, drove a commercially-oriented production in italy which was much different from neorealism. Films were made in a time where catholic and political censorship were strong. The church was a powerful force in italy and the dominant political party in italy after 1948 was the christian democrat party, a political party linked to the church. They had a power to determine what lms were seen and which were not. Some producers felt that their lms would not be approved by censors because they were dark and depicted the poverty of italy.
