China developed its own written language, philosophy, political, artistic and economic traditions which contributed to its early unity. Size of china size of roman empire sometimes. Agriculture: rice farming in the wetlands (lots of manual labor) The family was the central unit in society, not the individual. State had a ruler who was the son of heaven and the father of the people: ruled under the mandate of heaven. Mandate of heaven: state should guarantee people"s welfare. People had power/right to revolt against unfit ruler. Zhou dynasty: people conquered and succeeded the chang. Terracotta army: different facial expressions, arm position individualized. Lyric: shorter than 50 lines, expresses thoughts of a single speaker (not necessarily poet herself), one chief viewpoint. They were moral order believers, ancestor worshipping, this collection seeks honesty and simplicity, tells lives of the people, all 4 seasons represented. Encompasses ancient world, men and women, courtship and marriage, rulers and common peace.
