Cohort includes either entire population or representative sample of population. Cohort made of subjects w/a common exposure. Good comparison group is similar to the exposed group, but lacks the exposed. Can come either from internal or external sources. Might include levels of exposure instead of yes/no. Procedures for disease identification must be the same for exposed & unexposed group to avoid info bias. Best to incorporate multiple sources of info. Patients grouped by exposure, followed into the future to observe outcome. When study begins, outcome has not yet occurred. Historical cohort reconstructed w/data on exposure measured in the past. & data on outcome measured in the past after some follow-up. Both exposure & outcome have already occurred by the time the study begins.
