PSYCH-AD 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Retina, Thalamus, Parallel Computing
Document Summary
Perceptual set: a mental predisposition to perceive one thing and not another; a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that can influence what we hear, taste, feel, and see. We see/hear/taste/feel what we expect that we will. We form concepts, or schemas, that organize and allow us to interpret unfamiliar information. Our pre-existing schemas all influence how we interpret ambiguous sensations with top down processing. Richard warren: the brain can work backward in time to allow a later stimulus to determine how we perceive an earlier one. The context creates a top down influences perception. Perceptions are also influenced top down by our emotions and motivations. Parapsychology is the study of paranormal phenomena, including esp (extrasensory perception) and psychokinesis. Esp: the controversial claim that perception can occur apart from sensory input. The three most testable forms of esp are telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition.
