Eric ericson idea that your psychological development does not end at age 5. Interested in psychosocial conflicts more than psychosexual conflicts. Included drive and retained (altered) drive structure model. If you take away drive by including culture, you no longer have a theory that applies to everyone. Constructed new theory, defined by criticisms of freudian theory: whole new set of motivations + structures. Fundamental human needs/motivations: (a) people have fundamental need for satisfaction. (1) fundamental need to be able to express capabilities, talents, etc. i. e. to develop a sense of competency and capability and control and expertise in domains that matter to you. (2) fundamental need to be able to express aloud your internal states feelings, perceptions, thoughts, opinions, etc. Human requirement for integrative tendencies when you try to come up with compromised solution to internal conflict if it is out of balance, you will be unhappy and this leads to psychopathology: (b) need for security.
