How are we to live: fear and love as the primal motivators, reason that great enlightenment thing. What is it: hobbes and spinoza, considered materialists/ enlightenment figures, philosophers of reason, rationalists, aftermath of a scientific revolution-meant a paradigm change for philosophy, culture, etc. And that was that everything could be proved by science. Explained why things are- things can be. Only one thing in the universe, nature is only one thing. Spinoza says all that exists is substance and substance has different modalities/attributes. Spinoza says that conscious is a witness of the variations and determinations of the connotes in function with other bodies or ideas (pg 21) The mind and the body are aware of each other. Things in the world and how you feel about them (emotions) How do feel becomes an indication of what is going on in the world. The consciousness witnesses what your body feels (?)
