High middle ages 1000-1300, crusades started around 1100. Averroes + aquinas : rational theology, composed of ontology as well as metaphysics. Parmenides is the greek philosopher, who started ontology, which is the study of being, what being is. Metaphysics: branch of psychology, studies first principles, the first causes, causality. The moment you speak, a human has ontological as well as metaphysical beliefs. Metaphysics: every other being that exists has a cause, or is caused. Nothing comes from nothing: there is only one single being that is not caused, but all other beings are caused. (the single being was called the unmoved mover. , nothing becomes nothing, different types of causes exist. Material cause, ingredient that goes into the making of something. Formal cause, form, shape, figure of something. Final cause, the end towards which it directs, e. g. a seed"s purpose is to become an adult plant.
