They point out that the amount of farmland is decreasing while the population is increasing. Both extensification and intensification of agriculture will lead to land degradation. Many geographers believe malthus" theory is very pessimistic because they based on a belief that the world"s supply is fixed not expanding. Malthus did not foresee the advancement in technology that would help mankind survive. Crude birth rate- the total number of live births in a year for every 1,000 people alive in the society. Crude death rate- the total number of deaths in a year fro every 1,000 people alive in the society. Dependency ratio- the number of people under the age of 15 and over age 64, compared to the number of people active in the labor force. Doubling time- the number of years needed to double a population, assuming a constant rate of natural increase. Epidemiologic transition- distinctive causes of death in each stage of the demographic transition.
