Document Summary

Sensory reception, metabolic regulation, immunological defense mechanisms. Anatomy and function of the epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue & associated structures. The integumentary system is composed of the epidermis, dermis and underlying subcutaneous tissue. the skin is the largest organ in the body, comprising up to 15% of the total weight of the body. It"s total surface area ranges between 1. 5 to 2 square meters for an average individual. The scientific study and treatment of the integument is called dermatology . As a physical barrier to the outside world, the integument is said to be a selectively permeable membrane which prevents water loss, provides protection and regulates the bodies temperature. As a barrier, the integument offers limited physical protection against injury and trauma. The integument also offers protection against harmful uv light, microbes, toxins radiation and chemicals while maintaining it"s ability to selectively absorb other substances (estrogen or nicotine patches).
