Jamestown was home to gentlemen who didn"t know how to plant crops etc. Discover tobacco and use indentured servants to grow it. An armed rebellion in 1676 by virginia settlers led by nathaniel bacon against the rule of governor william berkeley. Because of this, the colonists realized they can"t keep bringing in indentured servants so there was a huge increase of enslaved africans in colonies as a result. Pilgrims arrived here in december but half died of disease or illness over winter because malnourishment. In 1621 they meet squanto who teaches them how to grow corn and to catch fish. Did not believe that puritans were going far enough & wanted even more. He believed that government & religion should be separated because politics would corrupt the church and that nobody but his wife was fit to congregate with him. He was removed from salem church, moved in with indians, bought land from indians, then founded providence.
