Surface: remote sensing (satellite) imagery, light detection and ranging (lidar) scanning, coverage of large areas. Remote sensing satellites: perspective from above, context, details hidden from ground level, over 70 currently in operation, oldest is landsat (1984, youngest is spot 6 (2013, most orbit the poles, some are stationary, range of sensors. Satellite data for arch: multispectral radiometer (light reflection, microwave radars, terrain, topography, geo referenced, land cover (forest, trees, rock types, crop marks, indicating buried features, data structure, digital data can be downloaded, grid files or jpgs. Discovering pyramids in egypt: visually discerned in images, not apparent on the ground, landsat satellite, not visible to eye, but emmitted by growing plants, uses infared light, pros & cons of satellite data for arch. Need special (expensive) software to process/overlay w/ gis.
