A large molecule containing thousands of atoms formed by combining one, two, or more kinds of small molecule (monomers) into chain or network structures. Polymer materials: a group of carbon containing (organic) materials, which have macromolecular structures. Natural polymers: occur widely in living organisms; very complex and specialized molecular structure. i. e. timber and natural rubber. Chain-polymers: polyethlene (pe): important hydrocarbon, (ch2)n. N = chain length (1,000 to 10,000) High density pe hdpe: polypropylene (pp) (ch2chch3)n. Network polymers: consist of polymer networks rather than linear chains. Two phase polymer hybrid: an important example is abs (acrylonitrile butacliene styrene), extensively used in pipe works. Natural rubber cross-linked or vulcanized with sulphur, several materials with rubbery properties. The polymer solid state: several pe, pp, the polyamides pa and polyester petp have civil. Pe & pvc are about 50% of the total plastics produced in the. Thermosets: a polymer material that cannot be reshaped after the manufacture process.
