Wrapping up book 1: penelope, telemachus, and the suitors. Penelope also knows how to play clever tricks, like odysseus. She knows how to weave and unweave. She weaves a death shroud for her father during the day, and unweaves a lot during the night. Telemachus has grown up w/o his father (odysseus) his whole life. He is finally trying to assert himself against his mother and the suitors. The suitors violate xenia - they take odysseus(cid:859)s food, (cid:449)i(cid:374)e, try to take his (cid:449)ife, (cid:449)ithout giving anything in return. Odysseus does(cid:374)(cid:859)t retur(cid:374) ho(cid:373)e u(cid:374)til about 10 years after the end of the trojan war (which already lasted 10 years) Stays o(cid:374) calypso(cid:859)s isla(cid:374)d for ~7 years. Kalypso wants to marry odysseus, keep him alive forever. Odysseus is very withdrawn from her, just broods on the island until the gods want odysseus to come back home.
