Focus on signs and the way they were formed the variety of signs. Consider how those signs are arranged in the graphical space (pay attention to the space). Consider the site of graphical communication (meaning physically, where is writing taking place and how is that location in uencing the systems of graphic communication?) Think of these all as inspiration for the graphic design we do today. Humans were using language about 100,000 years ago. Writing is something that ties a sign to a speci c part of spoken language. Painted stones from 11,000 years ago maybe have stick gures on them. Writing begins with the clay tokens that represented numbers/quantities. As people settled, they needed systems for literally keeping track of everyone and everything. 4,000 to 3,000 bce: cylinder seals cylinders with markings on it is rolled across clay and then it"s red. Maybe on this one it represents people entering into a contract.
