Document Summary

Update: a few video links (of tectonic plate stuff, etc. ) have been posted to carmen. We are way behind on the syllabusthat"s okay! We are just delving into greater detail. office to discuss questions missed on the exam. We find subduction in oceanic & continental crusts as well as when two oceanic plates meet. Hotter = less dense, colder = more dense--yet surprisingly the young plates are subducted under the old stuff sometimes (although most of the time it is the older plate that goes under). We still do not fully understand why subduction occurs. We find mountains when two continental crusts experience plate collision. Italy is tectonically more associated with africa than with the rest of europe! Italy/the swiss alps are an example of this kind of continental-continental collision. The appalachian mountains are an example of ancient continental- continental collision. They show you the start of what the himalayas look like today, but erosion has rounded out the appalachians.
