Document Summary

Main funcion: use atp to generate force. Simulaion to do so can come from nerves, intrinsic system regulaion, hormones, etc. Contain myoilaments (acin and myosin) which interact to produce tension. Preixes myo or mys or sacro- relate to muscle. Muscle the issue vs. muscle the organ. Muscle tissue- three types: skeletal (voluntary, striated)- long, cylindrical, mulinucleated cells, obvious striaions. Funcion: voluntary- locomoion, manipulaion of the environment, facial expression. Locaion: in skeletal muscles atached to bones or someimes the skin: cardiac (involuntary, striated)-heart muscle, one nucleus found centrally, much smaller than skeletal, branching cells (intercalated discs) Funcion: makes up heart wall and propels blood into the circulaion. Locaion: walls of heart: smooth (involuntary, nonstriated)- stomach, relaively small, wide in center and tapers of on both ends (spindle-shaped), nucleus is found in the widest part or middle of the muscle. Funcion: propels substances or objects along internal passageways (foodstuf, urine, a baby), can change the shape of the muscle.
