Pierre nanque = poet = wrote lyrics, survivor. Film is chronological 1933 goes through to the cleaning up of the camps. Historical footage is from mostly films made by the liberating armies (western & soviet). Used at trials, first time film used in court. This, in fact, happened --film aims to brutally present the truth. Moment of film"s creation: reflects a certain stage in documentary filmmaking + a certain stage in representations of the holocaust. Weren"t many holocaust films in 1955, nor were many circulated. filmmaker thinks we should not turn a deaf ear to the holocaust. Filmmaker wanted to shake his fellow europeans out of their slumber. The word jewish only occurs once in this film. Some think jews were the victims because they were most vulnerable, but if they weren"t around, the victims would"ve been somebody else. The desire to make others feel just as vulnerable as if they were jewish downplays anti-semitism.
