Lengyel and levi are both quick-witted and think fast in stressful situations: valuable asset. Lengyel, when about to be sent to gas chambers: finds a stick, has authority, escapes death. They both had a skill that allowed them to work indoors. Auschwitz, lengyel works as a doctor in the sik-bay . Lengyel close to giving up, but decides she wants to survive so that she can tell that tale. A number of scenes that seem to display that: despite the mistake she made in the beginning, she is not a bad person. Had access to medication, could have used it to train for things. She does so once, and feels bad about it--makes sure to say she only did it once. On some levels, she recognizes that it"s irrational to feel so guilty ( i know that there was no way for me to know; should not have followed husband to auschwitzbut i still feel so guilty ).
