Pros of book: challenged people/shook up the audience. It"s a certain historical reference: epigraph from hitler, the jews are a race, but not a human race, basically. Here he does something that other artists have done: take hold of the dehumanization of jews and kind of play around with it. German literature consist of personifying animals (e. g. bambi resonates with the condition of jews in 1993, author was a zionist ). Anyways, taking possession of a group and portraying it creatively. Some people looked at this as a powerful gesture (and of course some critiqued). : portraying jews as the hunted, often seen as. Spectacular elements of this story--anthropomorphic (use of animals as people). The framing of this story--it is a frame story, as in the telling of this story (between vladek and his son, artie) is a part of the story. Artie"s childhood was a wash with holocaust stories, yet he was never quite told directly.
