Deidra Rodriguez World History 1500 to present 1/9/14 1. Portugal: a. 1487: Bartolomeu Dias: Portuguese mariner (Knight in kings palace) i. First European to make it from Europe (Portugal) to the bottom of Africa. ii. King wanted him to find a route around Africa to get to Asia – rather than going through land. iii. How did they know they could go to Asia or know Asia was there? 1. Marco Polo in 1200s traveled from Italy to China, to Japan over land. a. They saw the wealth and grandeur with their own eyes that they would want or be wanted by a lot of Europeans. iv. Made some stops along the way but had every intention to keep going to Asia but his crew was too afraid. 1. They turned around and returned to Europe and did not make it to Africa. v. During this time- Chinese and Arabs were circulating in Indian ocean already—trading with all civilizations in that part of the world. 1. Technically Europeans were not the first because people were already there (establishing and trading)
