We say farewell to washington, april 30, 1789 march 4, 1797. Rural farmers, shop keepers, westerners and southern small planters growing. Geographic divide --> south: large plantations, production for internation trade, majority of labor: enslaved, majority: small farmers. Federalists national aristocracy, new englanders, mid atlantic-ers, merchants, lawyers, Manufactures, finance and commercial interests growing geographic divide north: small farms 20-40 acres, temporary seasonal labor/landless, family production, local production and trade, majority sailors, elites mostly merchants: international trade. 1 in 12 people lived in urban cities. 97% of adults did not have the ability to vote. The federalists emerged in the 1790s as a group who supported a strong centralized national government that would broadly interpret the government and the political leadership of men of property and experience. Federalists comprised the presidency and congress until 1800. They are important because federalist ideology shaped most us polices written before 1800.
