Lesson 5: the war in china and manchuria (july 1937-1939) The kid in front of me is using windows xp . Japan, 1931-1936: militarists firmly in control of the government. Political primacy of the army (army ran the government) Imperial council (emperor chaired the council, but he rarely intervened) Decision by concensious: extreme need to natural resources (oil, iron ore, rubber, tin). Want to secure them by force: military embroilment in china, believed they were the superior asians, destined to rule everyone, strategic debate: Army, northern strategy: russia was the enemy. Navy, southern strategy: united states was the enemy, emphasis on developing weaponry to achieve naval superiority (knew they were going to be outnumbered and out produced by americans) Fun fact: weaponry advances tend to be in isolation.
