Abraham lincoln assassinated, andrew johnson (his vp) was very lenient with letting the southern states back into the union: the same people that rebelled against the union began taking back over southern governments immediately upon being reinstated. The federal government didn"t do much of anything. Went down in the south to mediate land disputes and legal issues. Birthright citizenship--if you are born here, you are a citizen. Guarantees all americans the immunities of citizenship. States have the right to give all citizens equal protection of the law. Senator hiram revels: first african american in congress. In the south, a biracial was a threat to white supremacy. Black suffrage was unthinkable for white supremacists: organizations like the kkk began forming, who intimidated and would kill minorities. The republican party virtually disappeared in the south during this time: they began destroying reconstruction efforts in the south. They wanted to reverse the results of the civil war in the south through violence.
