First introduced to the u. s. through world"s fairs and expos. 1950s saw a growth in gamelan programs at universities, thanks to ethnomusicology programs: mantle hood (1918-2005) indonesian music specialist, henry cowell (1897-1965), john cage (1912-1992), daniel goode, gamelan son of lion, lou harrison. Uses at least some western instruments and harmony. A contemporary style, in imitation of the sound formerly made on hand drums (orkes melayu) and more recently on trap set and electric guitar. Distinct rhythm emphatic 4th and 1st beats in 4/4 meter: this rhythm is the source of its name (rest-rest-dang-dut, rest-rest, dang, dut, etc. Lyrics range in theme from islamic moralizing to love to social and political criticism. Combined more modern musical style with a clearly indonesian sound. Lyrics about love, social justice, the religion of islam. Begadang ii , 1978: appeals to lower class youth. Perbedaan ( difference ): criticizes sexually provocative movements by female dancers.
