Pedogenesis: is the process of soil formation as regulated by the effects of place, environment, and history. The 2 ways lichen can break down rocks or trees into soil: Physically: mechanical action of the fungal threads of the lichen penetrating the spaces between the rock crystals, together with changes in temperature and moisture which also help break down rock into soil.
