Learned helplessness: occurs when an individual is conditioned to emit no behavior to escape aversive conditions. Come on, man: learned helplessness as an explanation for battered women"s syndrome. Until the 70s, people thought women who stayed in abusive relationships must enjoy being battered. Fools the victim into thinking it"s a onetime thing cycle (tension building, beating, honeymoon phase) keeps continuing. Superior strength of the batterer convinced the victim she is helpless. If they try to leave, the batterer will convince them to stay. Goal: demonstrate if children were witnesses to adult"s aggressive display then they would imitate aggressive behavior when they have the opportunity. Results indicate that children can learn aggression through observational learning. Children always did what the adults had done to the doll. Gender effects too: girls imitated women more, boys imitated men more: required conditions for observational learning: Retention keep it in memory, know under what conditions.
