Crime with a rural emphasis: crime and deviance. The number of murders has ranged between 15,696 in 2015 to 17,128 in 2007 (fbi). The number of violent crimes (assault, rape, robbery) has ranged between 1,422,970 in 2007, and was 1,197,704 in 2015 (fbi). Fbi defines a hate crime as crimes motivated by biases based on race, gender, identity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. There are about 5,500 - 6,000 a year, with over half based on race/ethnicity and about 1/4 based on religion. About 900 hate groups in the us, with 34 located in ohio. Fbi defines a mass shooting as 4 or more victims in the same place and in short time period- single episode or event and in a single location. 70% of mass shootings do not occur in a home, not public. 57% of victims are children and women. Of all homicides, only 22% are children and women.
