History: biological determinism, racism and sexism, eugenics. Biosocial theories: biological factors interacting with environment, stress that genes do not cause someone to behave or feel; they simply facilitate tendencies or predispositions, no genes for crime. But, genes that may lead to particular traits (low empathy; impulsiveness) that increase chance of criminality in the right environment: the future of biosocial criminology wright and cullen. Arguments for = need more diversity in ideas b/c advances entire field. We are not latter-day lombrosians embracing a crude form of biological determinism . Argue anything can be distorted to justify bad policies and practices: heritability. Prenatal influences (e. g. , poverty, neighborhood disadvantage and substance abuse) Shared environmental factors between mother and child will be included in genetic estimates. Families that adopt tend to be similar to one another more similar parenting styles. Think overestimates biological component and undervalues social: gene environment interaction (gxe)
