Economic determinism: economic base determines all other sectors of society (base determines superstructure, peaked at apex of market capitalism. Thought could predict market with accuracy: criticism: does not include dialectic. Should be dialectic with culture and economic: solution: hegelian dialectic. Georg lukacs (1885 1971: reification: expanded fetishism of commodities. Takes mechanism and applies to more than just commodities (things given life of their own) Social structures become reified: false consciousness class consciousness. Do not have sense of own position in structure b/c system is reified (false consciousness) Overcome by class consciousness (says only possible in capitalism b/c people concerned with economics, not status) Antonio gramsci (1891 1937: revolution is not inevitable. Masses must rise up and take political action. Class consciousness needed and have to adopt revolutionary ideology: elites produce class consciousness and revolutionary ideology, hegemony: cultural leadership by ruling class. No revolution if just change base, must change superstructure.
