Walter byers- gained control of ncaa and was actually able to ban the payment of college athletes. Functionalists- college sports build consensus and unite teams and colleges, uphold tradition of amateurism (not getting paid, playing for the love of the sport) Promotes equilibrium- release aggression, provides entertainment to the public. Highly beneficial to capitalist society, advertisement and university funding. Students paid in better ways than salaries i. e. experiences and college scholarships. Conflict- competition for money, ncaa has led to corruption and illegal alternatives because stude(cid:374)ts do(cid:374)"t have ti(cid:373)e to get jo(cid:271)s. Ncaa relies on submission and waiver of student. Myth of the student-athlete: want people to assume that academics come before athletics and relieves the ncaa of worker compensation. Olympic precedent, change in it as it now allows sponsors of athletes.
