Arrogant, shameless, immoral, impulsive, antisocial, superficial, alert, self- assured, boastful, callous, remorseless, charming, irresponsible: this is the poisonous mix of traits that make up the psychopathic personality. Psychopaths file in and out of jails and mental institutions, inadequately classified as criminals, misfits, addicts, or alcoholics. Psychopaths also sit in corporate boardrooms or function as scientists or physicians or in any number of respectable capacities. None of them hears voices or displays any psychosis. Big trouble in a lifelong string of disasters that could run the gamut from financial ruin to murder. The term psychopathy has had a long and confusing history.
