Even before birth, fetus can hear some ambient sounds. Infants are sensitive to many speech sounds, not just sounds found in ambient language. Morphology and elaborate sentences = 30 months. Frequently found: p b m, t d n, k g, s h, w j. Rarely found: f v t d, s z ts dz, l r . Babbling is not necessary for normal speech development. Deaf children babble though not as much as normally-developing children. Children exposed to sign language babble" using their hands (manual babble). Babbling is influenced by prosodic patterns of ambient language. In babble, infants produce unusual sounds but not all sounds found in all languages of world. By 2: /m, /p, b, /h, /w, /n, /t,d/ Last acquired: /dz, /v, /t, / d/ Left-hand edge: 50% of children master the target sound in speech. Right-hand edge: 90% of children master the target sound in speech.
