Eye orbits can give us information on race, therefore the skull assists in determining race and sex: name and explain the 4 functions of the skeletal system. Stem cells: explain what a stem cell is. Stem cells are able to differentiate into specialized cell types. They do not have a job yet and hopefully one day we can manipulate them: describe and locate the following in a long bone: head, shaft, compact bone, spongy bone, growth plate, cartilage, yellow and red marrow. Head: top and bottom of the bone with red marrow. Shaft: long in the middle with yellow marrow. Growth plate: made of cartilage, close as we age and grow. Cartilage: located at growth plates and ends of long bones, turns to bone in time.
