Document Summary

Definition: a set of upheavals and transformations that would take place in the 18th century in what we could call the european parts of the atlantic world. Relationship with europe is the metropol; there is a growing tension between the colonies and the metropol. Especially for those who were of european dissent born in the colonies and those born in europe. Distinguish between intra-elite rivalry as opposed to mass uprising. The difference between a civil war and a revolution is whether or not the initiator of that war won, essentially. First, the question of land: the british would ban westward expansion. The settlers viewed this is a violation of their prerogatives. Second, taxes: the british empire was depleted of their resources after the seven-year war. The one thing it tried to do was increase their taxes. The combination of these problems resulted in people wanting to break off of the british empire.
