Chapter 15 – Psychological Disorders
• Developmental Psychopathology
o Behavior and experiences in childhood relevant in adult disorders
o Age-related variations in susceptibility
o Psychiatric illnesses are medical conditions influences by multiple etiological factors
• Major Depressive Episode
o Change in normal functioning for at least 2 weeks (5+ criteria below must be met for
diagnosis, but #1 or #2 MUST be present)
1. Depressed mood most of the day nearly every day
2. Markedly diminished loss of interest or pleasure
3. Weight loss
4. Insomnia/hypersomnia
5. Psychomotor agitation or retardation
6. Fatigue
7. Feelings of worthlessness
8. Lack of concentration
9. Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation
o Dysthymic disorder: less severe form of depression, very chronic and occurs more
days than not, may not meet diagnostic criteria for depression, down in the dumps
