In the nucleus there are pairs of chromosomes. In each pair of chromosomes and genes: one is inherited from the male and one from the female parent. Genes determine the hereditary characteristics (genotype) of animals. In all body cells, except the sperm or the egg, chromosomes exist in pairs. The testicles of a male and ovaries of a female produce gametes by a process called gametogenesis. Gametes produced by the male are called sperm. Gametes produced by the female are called eggs. Unique type of cell division in which gametes are formed is called meiosis. Each new gamete contains only one member of each chromosome pair. Fertilization: when the sperm and egg unite, each gamete contributes one chromosome to each pair of chromosomes.
