• Omnivorous – eats both animal and plant

• Mouth
o Used primarily for grinding feed (mechanical digestion)
o Saliva
▪ pH of 7.4 moistens feed and helps in chewing and swallowing
▪ Produced by 3 pairs of glands: parotid, mandibular, submaxillary
▪ Ptyalin (salivary amylase)
• Pig is only farm mammal with any amount of the enzyme
• Starts breakdown of starch. Of little value because feed does not stay in the
mouth very long and pH of stomach is too acidic for action in stomach
